The 2019 Lenten season begins on March 6th. Our focus for preaching will be the “I AM” statements from Jesus in John’s Gospel. The statements are more than just a novelty of John’s Gospel, they reveal the fullness of the identity of Jesus, who he claims to be and what claims he makes for himself.
Once again we’ll be inviting our candidates for ministry to take a turn at reflecting upon these statements.
Here is the schedule for Lent through Holy Week.
The Lenten journey begins at St. James on Ash Wednesday, March 6th.
There will be two opportunities to receive the Imposition of Ashes. Ashes will be available as a “walk in” experience beginning at 9 a.m. in the Chapel. Pastor Merle and Intern Sarah will be taking turns throughout the day.
Ash Wednesday Services will be held at 7:00 p.m. and will include Holy Communion.
Our theme for the Lenten Journey is “The Call to I AM.” We will be looking at each of the “I AM” statements of Jesus, what they reveal about his own understanding of ministry and purpose and then contemplating what God is calling us to be, or to become.
Midweek Schedule will be as follows:
Soup Suppers will begin at 5:30 p.m., and run until 7 p.m. to accommodate our Pantry Guests. This will again be a “pot luck” venture, with an invitation to bring a soup to share but there will also be one “feature soup” made in sufficient quantity to make sure there is always soup for all!
Worship Midweek after Ash Wednesday will be at 6:30 p.m. — This is a change. After some soup and fellowship we will adjourn upstairs for a half hour service that will include Holden Evening Prayer and a guest preacher.
The Soup will remain available for Pantry guests until 7 p.m.
Choir and Clean-up 7 p.m. After worship we’ll let our choir members get to their rehearsal, and will make our way downstairs to tidy up and put things away. We hope this will help extend the soup time for our Pantry guests and allow our choir members not have rehearsals run so late in the evening.
Here is the list of themes for the season, and our guest preachers.
